When you decide to get a navel piercing, it’s important to take care of it properly to ensure its longevity and prevent complications. The aftercare, particularly maintaining the cleanliness of the piercing, plays a crucial role in the healing process. This article aims to guide you on keeping your navel piercing clean and healthy.

1. Follow your piercer’s guidelines

First and foremost, pay close attention to the recommendations provided by your professional piercer. They will give you expert advice on how often to clean, what products to use, and additional care tips pertaining to your specific piercing.

2. Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the piercing

Before coming into contact with your piercing or changing jewelry, always wash your hands with mild soap and warm water to prevent introducing unwanted bacteria.

3. Clean using a saline solution

Prepare a saline solution by mixing 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt with 8 ounces of warm distilled or bottled water. Soak a cotton ball or a piece of gauze in the solution and gently dab around the navel piercing for 3-5 minutes, twice daily. Be sure not to overclean, as this can cause irritation.

4. Pat dry using clean tissue or paper towel

After cleansing with saline solution, gently pat dry the area using a fresh tissue or paper towel instead of a regular towel to avoid transmitting bacteria.

5. Avoid irritants

Do not use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or any other harsh chemicals that may prolong healing time or cause irritation on your navel piercing. Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas during the healing process.

6. Keep personal care products away from the piercing

Be cautious when using body lotions, perfumes, and other personal care products around your navel as they could cause irritation in pierced areas.

7. Wear proper clothing

Choose clothing that is loose-fitting and avoids friction around the navel area to minimize irritation and keep the area clean. Avoid high-waist or tight-fitting pants. Opt for fabrics that allow your skin to breathe.

8. Maintain good overall hygiene

As part of the aftercare, it’s essential to keep your entire body clean by showering regularly. However, do not submerge your navel piercing in water for extended periods during baths or while swimming until it is fully healed.

9. Monitor for signs of infection

Inspect your navel piercing daily for any signs of infection such as redness, swelling, discharge, or foul odors. If you notice any abnormal symptoms, consult with a professional piercer or a healthcare provider as soon as possible.

10. Allow enough time for healing

Patience is key when caring for your navel piercing. Give the piercing ample time to heal – this may take anywhere from 3 to 6 months or even longer for some individuals. Avoid changing jewelry or touching the piercing unnecessarily during this period.

Following these steps and adhering to proper aftercare guidelines are crucial in keeping your navel piercing clean and ensuring a smooth healing process. A healthy piercing promotes an aesthetically pleasing and long-lasting adornment to enjoy!
