Jack up a car can be a crucial skill for any car owner, whether you need to change a tire, access your vehicle’s underside, or perform maintenance tasks. It is important to follow the proper steps and use appropriate equipment to ensure safety. In this article, we will outline the ten steps you need to follow when jacking up a car.

1. Gather necessary tools and materials: Before beginning, make sure you have a sturdy jack, jack stands, wheel chocks, and a lug wrench.

2. Park on a level surface: Jacking up your car on an uneven surface can lead to accidents or damage. Find a level area with enough space to work around the vehicle comfortably.

3. Engage the parking brake: Before jacking up your car, always engage the parking brake to prevent any movement while it is raised.

4. Turn off the engine: Make sure the engine is turned off and the key is removed from the ignition.

5. Place wheel chocks: Position wheel chocks behind the wheels that will remain on the ground during jacking. This step will keep the wheels from rolling and potentially causing harm or damage.

6. Locate jacking points: Consult your vehicle’s manual for specified jacking points—usually near the front or rear axles—where you should place your jack.

7. Raise the jack: Position the jack under the designated jacking point and slowly lift it until it contacts your vehicle’s frame firmly but does not lift it off the ground yet.

8. Lift the vehicle: Begin raising your car by pumping or turning your jack’s handle depending on its type (hydraulic or mechanical). Be mindful of any signs of instability during lifting, and stop immediately if there are any concerns.

9. Position jack stands: Place jack stands under sturdy areas of your vehicle’s frame or suspension components as specified in your manual. Gradually lower your car onto the stands, ensuring that it rests securely and evenly on them.

10. Double-check stability: Before working on your vehicle, verify that it is stable by gently rocking it. If there is any significant movement, readjust the jack stands accordingly.

By following these ten steps, you can safely and successfully jack up your car. Remember always to practice caution and utilize the appropriate tools for the task at hand. Your safety and wellbeing should be the top priority whenever working on your vehicle.
