How to Install Proton GE on Steam Deck

Installing Proton GE on your Steam Deck can help enhance your gaming experience by providing access to additional compatibility and performance improvements beyond what’s available with the default Steam Proton version. Proton GE is a community-driven fork of Proton that often includes bleeding-edge enhancements. Follow these steps to install Proton GE on your Steam Deck:
1. Enable Desktop Mode: Press the Steam button → Select ‘Power’ → Select ‘Switch to Desktop’ to enter Desktop mode on your Steam Deck.
2. Open a Terminal: You can do this by clicking on the Applications menu in the top-left corner of the screen, typing “Konsole” into the search bar, and opening the application.
3. Download ProtonUp-Qt: ProtonUp-Qt is a GUI application that makes it easy to install custom versions of Proton like Proton GE. You can download it by entering the following command in the terminal:
“`
flatpak install flathub net.davidotek.pupgui2
“`
4. Launch ProtonUp-Qt: After installing, you can find ProtonUp-Qt in your Applications menu or run it directly from the terminal using:
“`
flatpak run net.davidotek.pupgui2
“`
5. Add a Version of Proton GE: Within ProtonUp-Qt, click on ‘Add version…’ and select ‘GE-Proton6’ or any other desired version of Proton GE from the dropdown menu. Click ‘OK’ to proceed.
6. Download and Install: After selecting a version of Proton GE, click on ‘Install’. This will automatically download and install the selected version of Proton GE for use with Steam.
7. Restart in Gaming Mode: Once installation is complete, you can restart your Steam Deck in Gaming Mode by clicking on the Application menu → Leave → Restart, then choosing ‘Restart and Switch to Gaming Mode’.
8. Select Proton GE for Games: Back in Gaming Mode, navigate to your games library, right-click (or press ‘STEAM’ + ‘X’) on a game you’d like to run with Proton GE, and select ‘Properties.’ Under the Compatiblity section, check ‘Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool,’ then select the version of Proton GE you installed from the dropdown list.
Once you have set up a game to use Proton GE, launch it to confirm that everything works as expected. Keep in mind that not all games will work perfectly with every custom version of Proton, and some experimentation might be necessary to find what works best for each game.
Always ensure you are downloading software from reputable sources and be aware that using non-official versions of software could potentially pose risks or lead to unexpected behavior in games or applications.
