Introduction:

The Somali cat, known for its striking appearance and playful personality, is a breed that many cat enthusiasts adore. Recognizing this unique breed can be quite an enjoyable activity for feline lovers. In this article, we will guide you through eight simple steps to help you identify a Somali cat.

Step 1: Look at the coat

Somali cats are known for their beautiful, lush coats. Their fur is medium to long in length, with a fine, soft texture. The coat has a distinctive “ticked” pattern which consists of multiple bands of color on each hair.

Step 2: Observe the colors

The Somali cat comes in various colors like red, blue, fawn, and sorrel. The coat color will appear deeper on the back and lighter on the legs, chest, and face.

Step 3: Notice the eyes

Somali cats have captivating almond-shaped eyes that come in brilliant shades of green or gold. Their eye rims are lined with dark pigment that accentuates their gaze.

Step 4: Observe the ears

One of the most striking features of a Somali cat is its large ears. They are wide at the base and pointed at the tips with tufts of fur called “ear furnishings” that give them an alert and curious appearance.

Step 5: Check the body size and shape

The Somali cat has a medium-sized body that is muscular yet elegant. They have slender legs and small oval paws with tufts of fur between their toes.

Step 6: Take note of the tail

A signature characteristic of Somali cats is their full, brush-like tail often referred to as a “fox tail”. The tail is quite long and fluffy, adding to their overall stunning appearance.

Step 7: Watch their personalities

Somali cats are known for their playful and affectionate nature. They are highly social, intelligent, and love to interact with their owners. Additionally, they are curious and tend to be quite active, craving both mental and physical stimulation.

Step 8: Consult a breeder or a cat expert

If you are still uncertain about whether a cat is a Somali breed or not, consult a reputable breeder or a cat expert. They can provide more information and answer any questions you might have.

Conclusion:

With these eight steps in mind, identifying a Somali cat becomes an easy and enjoyable task. Their captivating appearance, lively personality, and unique traits truly make them stand out among other breeds.
