How to Hit a Power Fade: 9 Steps

Introduction:

A power fade is a sought-after golf shot that can produce impressive accuracy and distance, allowing skilled golfers to curve the ball around obstacles and hazards. Mastering this technique can elevate your game to the next level, combining power with control for a standout performance on the course. In this guide, we will explore nine essential steps that can help you hit a power fade effectively.

Step 1: Properly Assess the Situation

Before attempting a power fade, evaluate your surroundings and the direction of the wind. Consider where you want to land your shot and whether a power fade is necessary or if an alternative golf shot would be more suitable.

Step 2: Align Your Body

Proper body alignment is key to hitting an accurate and controlled power fade. Align your body slightly left of your target, as this will enable you to swing more freely through impact while maintaining control of the ball trajectory.

Step 3: Adjust Your Grip

The grip you use for a power fade should encourage an open clubface at impact. Weaken your grip slightly, by turning both of your hands counterclockwise on the club handle, ensuring that your left hand’s V-shape (formed by thumb and forefinger) points towards your right shoulder at address.

Step 4: Check Your Ball Position

Place the ball closer to the front foot in your stance (towards the toe line for right-handers). This will help promote an outside-to-inside swing path, which is crucial for executing an effective power fade.

Step 5: Shallow Your Downswing

To maintain control throughout your swing, focus on shallowing out your downswing. This means keeping the club as close to parallel with the ground as possible during its descent. Practice swings focusing on this shallow angle to build muscle memory.

Step 6: Maintain Clubface Control

As you approach impact, it is vital to ensure that your clubface remains slightly open. Achieve this by concentrating on how your left wrist moves during the swing, keeping it flat or slightly bowed towards impact.

Step 7: Swing Through Impact

To hit a power fade, you must deliberately swing through impact and not release the club with a full follow-through. This reduces the ball’s spin rate while maintaining its right-to-left flight path. Think of “holding off” the release as you pass through impact.

Step 8: Monitor Finish Position

Pay attention to where your hands finish after swinging through impact. For a successful power fade, your hands should complete their arc closer to your body, rather than extending outwards, as with a standard full follow-through.

Step 9: Practice, Practice, Practice

Hitting a consistent power fade requires dedication and repetition. Spend time at the driving range perfecting each step before applying them on the course. Over time, you will develop confidence in your ability to execute this shot when required.

Conclusion:

Mastering the power fade can provide exceptional results in both distance and accuracy when executed correctly. Follow these nine steps diligently and practice consistently to unlock this skill that can set you apart from other golfers on the course.
