How to Harvest Cashews: 9 Steps

Cashews are not only delicious, but also a rich source of healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. However, the process of harvesting cashews can be a bit challenging if you don’t know what to do. Follow these nine steps to ensure that you efficiently and safely harvest cashews.
1. Prepare for the harvest: Before starting, make sure you have the necessary equipment like thick gloves and long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin from the toxic resin present in the cashew shells.
2. Identify ripe cashew apples: Look for cashew apples that have turned from green to a bright red or yellow color. This indicates that they’re ready to be harvested.
3. Gently twist and pull the cashew apple: To avoid damaging the tree or fruit, carefully twist and pull the apple at its stem until it comes free from the branch.
4. Separate the nut from the apple: Hold the cashew apple with one hand and gently twist off the nut at its stem with your other hand.
5. Dry the nuts outside: Spread out the nuts in a single layer on a flat surface under direct sunlight. Be sure to cover them with a net to prevent birds or other animals from taking them. Allow them to dry outside for at least two days or until their shells become hard.
6. Roast or steam the nuts to remove toxins: Roasting or steaming helps neutralize toxic resin found in their shells. You can either do this in an oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, on an open fire, or by using a steamer for an hour.
7. Cool down the nuts: Once they’ve been roasted or steamed, allow them to cool down completely before handling further.
8. Crack open the shells: Use a nutcracker or similar tool to carefully crack open each shell while wearing gloves. Be cautious, as the cashew shells may be hot and can release toxic resin when cracked.
9. Remove and store the cashews: Extract the whole cashew from the shell and place it on a tray to cool down. After they’re completely cooled, transfer them to an airtight container and store them in a cool, dry location.
With these nine steps, you’ll be able to harvest your cashews safely and successfully. Enjoy the fruits of your labor by incorporating these tasty nuts into your favorite recipes or savoring them as a healthy snack.
