How to Hand Stitch a Rolled Hem: 7 Steps

A rolled hem is a delicate and attractive finished edge used in sewing thin or lightweight fabrics, such as silk or linen. Hand stitching a rolled hem is an essential skill for those who enjoy sewing projects and it is preferred by many over using a sewing machine to ensure accuracy and control. Below are seven easy steps to hand stitch a rolled hem.

1. Gather your materials:

To hand stitch a rolled hem, you’ll need the following:

– Lightweight fabric

– Matching thread

– Hand-sewing needle

– Scissors

– Pins

– Seam ripper (optional)

– Iron and ironing board

2. Prepare the fabric:

Before beginning, make sure your fabric is clean and pressed. If needed, pre-wash the fabric according to the care instructions, then iron it carefully to remove any wrinkles.

3. Trim the raw edge:

Using your scissors, carefully trim the raw edge of the fabric to create an even edge and remove any fraying.

4. Fold and pin the hem:

Starting at one end of the fabric, fold the raw edge inwards approximately 1/8-inch (3 mm) and pin it in place using dressmaker pins. Continue this process all the way around the fabric’s edge until it’s completely pinned.

5. Thread your needle:

Choose a matching thread color for your fabric and cut a length of approximately 18 inches (45 cm). Thread your needle, then tie a knot at the end of your thread.

6. Begin stitching:

With your fabric pinned, begin stitching near an end using small stitches. Insert the needle into the folded edge (the inside fold) of the hem, making sure not to go through both layers of fabric – this will create a nearly invisible stitch on the right side of your material. Next, catch just one or two threads from the main part of the fabric and then slide the needle back through the folded edge. Repeat this process, making sure to keep the stitches as small and even as possible.

7. Press the finished hem:

Once you have stitched the entire hem, remove the pins and gently press it with an iron to create a neatly finished rolled hem. This will help set the stitches and further reinforce the integrity of your hand-stitched rolled hem.

By following these seven simple steps, you can create a beautiful hand-stitched rolled hem on a variety of lightweight fabrics. Perfect for items such as scarves, table linens, or clothing, hand stitching allows for greater control and precision – giving your sewing projects a professional and polished finish.
