How to Grow Lentils: 12 Steps

Lentils are a versatile and healthy legume that can be grown in your own garden. In addition to their nutritional benefits, lentils are also quite easy to grow and maintain. This article will guide you through the 12 steps needed to grow your own lentil plants.

1. Choose the right lentil variety: There are several types of lentils to choose from, such as green, brown, red, and black varieties. Choose one that suits your taste preferences and local climate conditions.

2. Purchase quality seeds: To ensure a successful harvest, start by buying high-quality, certified seeds from a reputable supplier.

3. Prepare the soil: Lentils thrive in well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. To improve drainage, add organic matter like compost or aged manure to the soil.

4. Choose the planting site: Lentils need full sun to grow optimally, so choose a spot in your garden that gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

5. Sow the seeds: Plant lentil seeds about 1 inch deep and 4 inches apart in rows spaced at least 18 inches apart.

6. Water consistently: Keep soil consistently moist during the germination process (about two weeks). Once seeds have sprouted, reduce watering but continue to maintain even moisture levels in the soil.

7. Provide support: Lentil plants may require support as they grow taller. Use stakes or trellises to keep them upright and off the ground.

8. Monitor for pests and diseases: Common pests that affect lentil plants include aphids and whiteflies. Regularly inspect your plants for these pests and apply neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

9. Fertilize moderately: Lentils don’t require much fertilization as they can fix nitrogen in the soil. Apply a low-nitrogen, balanced fertilizer once during the growing season if needed.

10. Weed regularly: Regular weeding is essential to promote healthy growth and prevent competition for nutrients and water. Hand-pulling or hoeing are the most effective methods for controlling weeds in a lentil garden.

11. Harvest your lentils: When the pods become dry and brittle, they’re ready to be harvested. Pull up the entire plant or cut off individual pods and allow them to dry in a cool place for a week.

12. Store your lentils: After drying, remove the seeds from their pods and store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Lentils can be stored for up to a year before losing their quality.

By following these 12 steps, you’ll be able to successfully grow your own lentils and enjoy their many health benefits. Happy gardening!
