How to Grow Bamboo

Bamboo is an attractive, fast-growing and versatile plant that has earned its place in many gardens around the world. Its popularity is due to its quick growth rate, ability to create privacy screens, and low maintenance. In this article, we will explore the essential steps to grow bamboo successfully, from choosing the right type to planting and caring for your plants.

1. Choose the right variety of bamboo

There are two primary types of bamboo: clumping and running. Clumping bamboo has a slow expansion rate and is less invasive than running bamboo. These varieties are ideal for smaller gardens or when you want to have better control over their spread. Running bamboo, on the other hand, spreads quickly by underground rhizomes and can cover large areas in a short time. This type of bamboo is ideal for creating natural screens or hedges but requires more ongoing management.

Some popular varieties include Phyllostachys (running) for its beautiful colors and Bambusa (clumping) for hedging purposes.

2. Select a suitable location

Find an area in your garden with well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight. Ideally, a spot that receives at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day will be perfect for most bamboo varieties.

3. Plant your bamboo

Dig a hole that is twice the size of the root ball or container you received your bamboo plant in. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Fill in the space around the root ball with a mixture of garden soil and compost or organic matter.

4. Watering

Bamboo plants need regular watering during their establishment phase – usually within the first 6-12 months after planting depending on climate conditions. Water deeply once or twice a week during this period to encourage root development.

5. Fertilize

Fertilize your bamboo plants during the growing season (spring and summer) with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer or specialized bamboo fertilizer. This will provide essential nutrients for healthy growth and vigorous root development.

6. Pruning

Prune dead, yellowing, or thinning bamboo canes to keep your plants looking neat and allow for air circulation within the clump. Also, trimming the lower branches can create a more attractive appearance by revealing the beautiful bamboo poles.

7. Controlling spread (for running varieties)

To control the spread of running bamboo varieties, install a rhizome barrier made of metal or plastic that extends at least 24 inches deep into the soil around the perimeter of your bamboo planting. This will prevent the invasive rhizomes from spreading into unwanted areas of your garden.

With proper care and maintenance, bamboo can be a unique, attractive addition to any landscape. Follow these steps to ensure a successful and thriving bamboo garden in your backyard.
