How to Grease Trailer Bearings: 13 Steps
If you own a trailer, maintaining the wheel bearings is essential for ensuring smooth and efficient functioning. Greasing your trailer bearings will prolong their life and keep your trailer in top condition. In this article, we will guide you through the 13 steps required to grease your trailer bearings properly.
1. Gather necessary tools and materials: You will need a jack, jack stands, wheel chocks, a lug wrench, pliers, a flat-head screwdriver, a bearing packer or rubber gloves, fresh grease, clean rags, and new seals.
2. Park your trailer on a level surface: Make sure your trailer is parked on a flat surface with the wheels chocked to avoid any movement.
3. Jack up the trailer: Raise one side of the trailer using a jack and support it with jack stands underneath the frame.
4. Remove the wheel: Remove the lug nuts using a lug wrench and take off the wheel.
5. Remove the dust cap: Use pliers or a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the dust cap that covers the bearing assembly.
6. Remove the cotter pin: Straighten the cotter pin that holds the castle nut in place using pliers; then gently pull it out.
7. Remove the castle nut and washer: Once you have removed the cotter pin, unscrew the castle nut and take off both it and its accompanying washer.
8. Pull off the hub assembly: Carefully slide out the hub assembly from the spindle without letting bearings fall out.
9. Extract bearings from hub assembly: Using flat-head screwdrivers as leverage points, removing bearings from both sides of hubs after removing seals by tapping near edges.
10. Clean parts thoroughly: Inspect and clean all parts including bearings, races, spindle, etc., with clean rags and an appropriate solvent before applying fresh grease.
11. Pack new grease into bearings: Using a bearing packer or rubber gloves, force new grease into all bearing cavities, ensuring that all rollers and spaces are adequately lubricated.
12. Reinstall bearings, hub assembly, and new seals: Once bearings are greased, put them back into the hub assembly with races first (large bearing) followed by smaller one. Insert new seal into postion after greasing spindle.
13. Reassemble the wheel: Slide the hub assembly back onto the spindle. Replace the washer, castle nut, cotter pin, and dust cap. Put the wheel back on and secure it with lug nuts.
Repeat these steps for each of the remaining wheels on your trailer. By following this step-by-step guide to grease your trailer bearings, you ensure your trailer’s longevity and high performance for countless adventures to come.
