How to Graph an Ellipse: 11 Steps

Step 1: Understand the equation

The general equation for an ellipse is (x²/a²) + (y²/b²) = 1, where a and b are the lengths of the major and minor axes respectively.

Step 2: Identify the center

The center of the ellipse is at the coordinate (0,0) when there are no additional components in the equation. For an equation in the form ((x-h)²/a²) + ((y-k)²/b²) = 1, the center is at point (h,k).

Step 3: Find the lengths of major and minor axes

Determine the values of a and b by comparing your equation to the standard ellipse equation. The major axis is 2a and the minor axis is 2b.

Step 4: Determine horizontal or vertical orientation

If a > b, then the ellipse is horizontally oriented. If b > a, then it is vertically oriented.

Step 5: Draw a coordinate plane

On a sheet of graph paper or on digital software, create a coordinate plane with x and y axes.

Step 6: Plot the center on your graph

Mark the center of your ellipse at point (h,k).

Step 7: Plot vertices

Head in either horizontal or vertical direction depending on your orientation from step 4. For horizontal orientation go left and right from center by ‘a’ units, and for vertical orientation go up and down by ‘b’ units. These are your vertices.

Step 8: Plot co-vertices

For horizontal orientation, move up and down from center by ‘b’ units, while in vertical orientation move left and right by ‘a’ units. These are your co-vertices.

Step 9: Sketch a rectangle using vertices and co-vertices

Connect opposite vertices and co-vertices with straight lines to create a rectangle on the graph.

Step 10: Draw the ellipse

Beginning at a vertex, carefully draw an ellipse following the boundaries of the rectangle, making sure the curve intersects each vertex and co-vertex. Use a smooth, continuous line.

Step 11: Check your work

Finally, double-check your values for center, vertices, and co-vertices, as well as your curve’s orientation to ensure accuracy.

And there you have it! In 11 steps, you have successfully graphed an ellipse. With practice, this process will become more intuitive and less time-consuming for you.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
