Introduction

Sunburn is not only painful but can also lead to long-term skin damage if not treated properly. Want to get rid of sunburn fast? Here are 12 steps you can follow to soothe sunburnt skin and promote faster healing.

Step 1: Cool down the burn

As soon as you notice sunburn, take a cool bath or shower. You can also apply a cold compress to the affected area for around 15 – 20 minutes multiple times a day.

Step 2: Moisturize

Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer while your skin is still damp. This will help lock in moisture and prevent dryness and peeling.

Step 3: Hydrate

Drink plenty of water as sunburn can cause dehydration. Staying well-hydrated will aid in the healing process.

Step 4: Take anti-inflammatory medication

Over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen can help reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling.

Step 5: Use aloe vera

Apply pure aloe vera gel directly to the sunburnt area or use products containing a high percentage of aloe vera for soothing relief.

Step 6: Apply hydrocortisone cream

Over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams can provide relief from itching and inflammation caused by sunburn.

Step 7: Wear loose clothing

Tight clothes can further irritate sunburnt skin. Opt for soft, loose, and breathable materials instead.

Step 8: Avoid harsh soaps

When showering, use mild soaps with added moisturizers that won’t strip away natural oils from your skin, worsening the burn.

Step 9: Limit sun exposure

Stay out of direct sunlight until your skin has had time to heal. If you must go outside, wear protective clothing and use broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Step 10: Avoid popping blisters

As tempting as it may be, don’t pop sunburn blisters as it can lead to infection and slow down the healing process.

Step 11: Apply over-the-counter remedies

You can use creams containing lidocaine or benzocaine for temporary relief of pain and discomfort.

Step 12: Seek medical attention if needed

If your sunburn is severe, accompanied by fever, extreme pain, or showing signs of infection, see a doctor immediately.

Conclusion

In conclusion, taking care of your sunburnt skin is essential in promoting faster healing and preventing long-term damage. Remember that prevention is always better than cure; make sure you regularly apply sunscreen with a high SPF, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure to avoid sunburn in the first place.
