Introduction:

Having a car insurance policy is essential in California, even if you don’t have a driver’s license. In some cases, people may need coverage for reasons other than driving, such as ensuring the car is covered while someone else drives. This article will guide you through securing car insurance without a driver’s license in California.

1. Determine Why You Need Insurance:

First and foremost, it is important to understand why you need car insurance without a driver’s license. Some possible reasons may include:

– Owning a vehicle that someone else will drive
– Owning a vehicle being financed or leased
– Owning a classic or collector’s car that is not driven but still requires protection

2. Find an Insurance Company That Offers Non-Owner Policies:

Some insurance companies offer non-owner car insurance policies for those who do not have a driver’s license. These policies provide liability coverage so that you are protected if someone else driving your vehicle causes an accident. Do your research and compare quotes to find the best deal.

3. Locate an Excluded Owner Policy Provider:

Another option in California is obtaining an “excluded owner” policy, where the person not having the driver’s license is considered an excluded owner who won’t be driving the insured vehicle. The person driving must have their own personal auto insurance policy.

4. Secure an Affidavit of Non-Use:

If you are not planning to drive your vehicle at all, the DMV might require you to submit an Affidavit of Non-Use (ANU) Declaration Form (REG 5090). This document states that your vehicle will not be operated on public roadways in California and hence, do not require compulsory automobile liability insurance.

5. Enlist a Primary Driver:

When applying for a car insurance policy without a driver’s license, indicate the primary driver on the policy – typically someone with a valid driver’s license who will be using your vehicle. Be aware that the insurance premium might be affected depending on the primary driver’s personal history and driving record.

6. Purchase your Policy:

After comparing quotes and selecting an insurance provider, follow the company’s application process to purchase your policy. Ensure that you meet all requirements and provide accurate information to avoid any issues in the future.

Conclusion:

Getting car insurance without a driver’s license in California is not impossible. By understanding why you need coverage, researching your options, and enlisting a primary driver, you can secure a policy that meets your needs. It is essential to remain informed to ensure compliance with California’s insurance laws and provide protection for yourself and others on the road.
