Introduction:

Obtaining an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a crucial step for any author or publisher looking to sell books worldwide. The ISBN is a unique identifier that helps keep track of books across different libraries, retailers, and sales channels. In this article, we will guide you through the process of getting your own ISBN number in just 8 steps.

Step 1: Determine if you need an ISBN

First, determine whether your book requires an ISBN. Any book published and intended for sale generally needs an ISBN to assist with tracking and cataloging. However, eBooks distributed solely through platforms like Amazon Kindle may not need one, as these platforms have alternative identifying numbers (e.g., ASIN).

Step 2: Consider the number of ISBNs needed

Each version or format of your book requires its own unique ISBN. This includes paperback, hardcover, eBook, and audiobook editions. Consider the number of formats you plan to release so that you can apply for the appropriate number of ISBNs.

Step 3: Identify your national ISBN agency

The International ISBN Agency oversees the assignment of ISBNs globally, but it delegates responsibility to regional agencies for each specific country. Locate your country’s regional agency by visiting https://www.isbn-international.org/agencies.

Step 4: Register with your national ISBN agency

Once you’ve identified your national agency, create an account on their website to register as a publisher or self-publisher. You’ll be asked to provide basic information about yourself or your organization.

Step 5: Provide detailed information about your book(s)

After registering on your national agency’s website, you’ll need to provide detailed information about your book(s). This may include the book’s title, author name(s), publication date, format(s), and language. You might also be required to assign categories and provide a brief synopsis for each book.

Step 6: Choose your ISBN package

Most national ISBN agencies offer various packages that cater to different types of authors and publishers. These packages determine the number of ISBNs provided, as well as any additional services offered, such as barcode generation or access to detailed sales data. Select the package that best suits your needs and budget.

Step 7: Pay for your ISBN(s)

Complete your purchase by submitting payment details for your chosen package. Keep in mind that costs can vary depending on the package selected and your national agency’s fees. Once payment is confirmed, you will receive a receipt for your order.

Step 8: Receive and apply your ISBN(s)

Your agency will issue your new ISBN(s) after processing your application. You can then assign each code to its corresponding book format. Be sure to include the ISBN on the title page or copyright page and barcode (if obtainable) of each physical copy you produce.

Conclusion:

By following these 8 steps, you can successfully obtain an ISBN number for your book, making it easier to sell copies worldwide and track sales. Remember that an ISBN is an essential tool for authors and publishers looking to establish their presence in the global market, so be sure to secure yours before releasing your next book.
