How to Fold a Map

Introduction

Maps have long been an essential tool for explorers, travelers, and those seeking to understand the lay of the land. While digital maps are increasingly popular, physical maps continue to offer several advantages, such as their reliability during poor internet connectivity or as a keepsake. However, handling and folding a map can be intimidating for many, especially given its large size and delicate paper. To help you master this skill, we have put together this step-by-step guide on how to fold a map.

Step 1: Flatten the Map

Begin by laying the map flat on a clean surface with the area of interest facing up. If it already has existing crease lines, use them as a guide for folding. Smooth out any wrinkles or bumps within the map.

Step 2: Fold Horizontally

To start folding, bring one side of the map to meet the other, ensuring that you align both edges properly. You might need to size down a large map by first folding it into half or thirds horizontally before proceeding with the vertical folds.

Step 3: Fold Vertically

Once you have reduced the width of your map through horizontal folding, bring one vertical side towards the center and align it carefully. Then, fold the other vertical side on top of the center-folded section in an accordion-style manner. Ensure that each vertical fold is of similar width for uniformity.

Step 4: Inspect Your Folds

After folding your map horizontally and vertically, give it a once-over to ensure that there are no loose edges or corners sticking out. In addition to offering a neat appearance, this also helps protect your map from damages during storage or transportation.

Step 5: Label and Store

Lastly, label your map’s outer side if you’re storing different maps together in order to find specific ones easily when needed. Slip your freshly folded map into a waterproof sleeve, ziplock bag, or a custom map case to keep it safe from moisture and potential damage.

Unfolding Your Map

To unfold the map, gently reverse these steps while taking care not to tear or crumple the paper. When opening your map, lay it flat on a clean surface before pulling apart the folds. Start with the vertical folds first, followed by the horizontal ones.

Conclusion

Mastering the art of folding a map appropriately is an important skill for travelers, hikers, and geography enthusiasts. It preserves your map’s condition and ensures that it can be easily stored and transported. By following this step-by-step guide, you’ll be folding maps like a pro in no time. And don’t forget to enjoy your travels—wherever they may take you!
