How to Fix Windows Update Error Code 0x80070002

Windows Update is an essential aspect of the Windows operating system. It helps to keep your system updated with the latest updates and patches that are released by Microsoft. However, there might be times when you encounter issues while trying to update Windows. One such common error code that users encounter is 0x80070002. This error code is caused when Windows Update fails to download or install updates. In this article, we will discuss the steps that you can take to fix the Windows Update Error Code 0x80070002.

Method 1: Restart Windows Update Service

The first method to fix the Windows Update Error Code 0x80070002 is to restart the Windows Update service. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Press Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

Step 2: Type ‘services.msc’ in the Run box and press Enter.

Step 3: In the Services window, scroll down and locate ‘Windows Update service’.

Step 4: Right-click on the ‘Windows Update service’ and select ‘Stop’.

Step 5: After a few seconds, right-click on the ‘Windows Update service’ again and select ‘Start’.

Step 6: Restart your computer and try updating your Windows again.

Method 2: Delete Temporary Files

The second method to fix the Windows Update Error Code 0x80070002 is to delete temporary files on your system. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Press the Windows key + R key to open the Run dialog box.

Step 2: Type ‘%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore’ in the Run box and press Enter.

Step 3: Select all the files in the folder and delete them.

Step 4: Restart your computer and try updating Windows again.

Method 3: Use Windows Update Troubleshooter

If the above methods fail, you can use the Windows Update troubleshooter to fix the Windows Update Error Code 0x80070002. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Press Windows + I keys to open the Settings app.

Step 2: Select ‘Update & Security’ from the list of options.

Step 3: Click on ‘Troubleshoot’ from the left-hand side menu.

Step 4: Select ‘Windows Update’ and click on the ‘Run the troubleshooter’ button.

Step 5: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooter.

Step 6: Restart your computer and try updating Windows again.

Method 4: Reset Windows Update Components

If none of the above methods work, you can reset the Windows Update components. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Press Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

Step 2: Type ‘cmd’ in the Run box and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.

Step 3: Type the following commands and press Enter after each command:

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Step 4: Restart your computer and try updating Windows again.
