USB 3.0 ports are essential for high-speed data transfer and other important tasks. But sometimes, these USB ports stop working in Windows. It could be an issue with the hardware or drivers, among other things. Fortunately, there are some effective solutions to resolve this problem. In this article, we’ll walk you through some simple steps to fix USB 3.0 ports not working in Windows.

1. Check the USB device

Ensure that the USB device you’re connecting to the USB 3.0 port is not faulty. Try connecting it to another USB port on your device or try connecting a different USB device to the same USB 3.0 port. In case the device is not detected by the computer, it means the issue lies with the USB port. If you’re using an external hard drive, try connecting it to another computer to check if it works.

2. Check for driver issues

In some cases, outdated or missing drivers could cause USB 3.0 ports to stop working. To check for driver issues, follow these steps:

– Press the Windows key + X and click on Device Manager.
– Under Universal Serial Bus controllers, look for the USB 3.0 driver. Right-click on it and select Update driver.
– Select Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the prompts.
If Windows fails to update the driver software, you can download the updated driver from your device’s manufacturer website and install it manually.

3. Check the power management setting

The Power Management settings in Windows can also affect the USB 3.0 ports. Here’s how to check and fix it:

– Press the Windows key + X and click on Device Manager.
– Locate USB 3.0 Hub and right-click on it.
– Select Properties and click on the Power Management tab.
– Make sure that the checkbox beside “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” is unchecked.
– Click OK.

4. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup is a feature in Windows that allows the device to boot up quickly. However, it could cause issues with USB 3.0 ports. Here’s how to disable it:

– Press the Windows key + R and type in Control Panel.
– Click on Power Options.
– Click on Choose what the power buttons do.
– Choose Change settings that are currently unavailable.
– Uncheck the box beside Turn on fast startup (recommended).
– Click Save changes.

5. Reset BIOS settings

If the above steps don’t work, it’s possible that the USB 3.0 ports are disabled in the BIOS. Here’s how to reset BIOS settings:

– Restart the device and press the key that prompts the BIOS setup. This could be F2, F10, or Del, depending on the device.
– Navigate to the USB configuration section and ensure that the USB 3.0 ports are enabled.
– Save the changes and exit.

Conclusion

These simple steps can help you fix USB 3.0 ports not working in Windows. Try them one by one until the issue is resolved. If the issue persists, you may need to seek technical assistance for further troubleshooting. Remember to keep your drivers updated and avoid using faulty USB devices.
