Introduction:

Packet loss is a common issue experienced by many internet users. When packet loss occurs, data packets traveling across a network fail to reach their intended destination. This can lead to slow internet speeds, lagging applications, and dropped calls. In this article, we will explore eight steps to fix packet loss and highlight five of the best tools available.

8 Steps to Fix Packet Loss:

1. Check your cables: Inspect and replace any damaged or old ethernet cables connecting your devices.

2. Update your drivers: Ensure that the drivers for your router, network adapter, and other related devices are up-to-date.

3. Restart your equipment: Power-cycle your modem, router, and switch to reset connections and clear any temporary glitches.

4. Test for packet loss: Use an online tool like ping-test.net or run a packet loss test using command prompt on Windows (ping [ip-address] -t) or Terminal on macOS (ping [ip-address]).

5. Reduce network congestion: Disconnect unnecessary devices from your network to free up bandwidth.

6. Optimize your router settings: Adjust settings such as Quality of Service (QoS), Wireless channel selection, and MTU size for better performance.

7- Configure Firewall settings: Make sure your firewall isn’t blocking necessary traffic by setting appropriate rules.

8. Contact your ISP: If none of the above solutions work, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for assistance or ask for an upgrade in service if needed.

5 Best Tools for Monitoring and Diagnosing Packet Loss:

1. Wireshark: A popular open-source network protocol analyzer that can help identify the source of packet loss by capturing and analyzing network traffic.

2. PingPlotter: A graphical network monitoring and troubleshooting tool that offers insights into real-time packet loss statistics.

3. SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM): A comprehensive network monitoring software with advanced packet loss detection and alerting capabilities.

4. PRTG Network Monitor: An all-in-one network monitoring solution that can track packet loss, latency, and other important metrics.

5. SmokePing: A versatile and customizable open-source tool that measures network latency and visualizes packet loss over time.

Conclusion:

Fixing packet loss is essential for maintaining a healthy and stable internet connection. Utilize these eight steps combined with powerful monitoring tools to diagnose and address packet loss issues, improving your overall online experience.
