How to Fix Gross Car Heater Smells

A gross car heater smell can be a nuisance and also a potential health hazard, especially if it smells like burning or chemicals. Fortunately, fixing this issue is not rocket science. With a few simple steps, you can eliminate the smell and get your vehicle smelling fresh again. Here are some of the solutions you need to try.

  1. Change Your Cabin Air Filter

The cabin air filter in your car plays a significant role in keeping the air inside your vehicle clean. Over time, it can get clogged with dirt, debris, and other particles, leading to a foul smell. Changing your cabin air filter is an easy fix you can do yourself. Simply locate the filter, remove the cover, and take out the old filter. Put in the new one and reattach the cover.

  1. Check for Mold

Mold is a common offender in causing a musty smell in a car. If you suspect that mold is the culprit, check the carpets, mats, and seats for any signs of growth. Cleaning the affected areas with a cleaning agent like vinegar or bleach can help get rid of the mold.

  1. Clean the AC System

The air conditioning system in your car can harbor bacteria and other microorganisms that cause bad smells. To fix this, turn the AC on high, and roll down the windows to let fresh air in. Then, locate and spray two or three rounds of an AC cleaning solution into the system’s intake duct. Run the AC for 15-20 minutes and then switch off the car and spray the cleaner directly into the vents.

  1. Check for a Clogged Drain

If the smell is a nasty, rotten egg or sulfur-like odor, there’s a good chance you have a clogged air conditioning drain. This blockage can cause water to accumulate and give off an unpleasant smell. To clear the drain, locate the drain tube underneath the car and use a stiff wire to dislodge any debris and allow water to flow freely.

  1. Replace the Heater Core

If the smell is similar to burning plastic, then the cause could be a faulty heater core. A defective heater core can leak antifreeze into the heater system, causing the burning smell. Replacing the heater core is a bit more complicated, and you may need a mechanic to fix it.

In conclusion, a gross car heater smell is not only unpleasant but could be an indication of more severe problems. Use the above solutions to identify and fix the root cause of the smell. If none of these fixes work, then consult a qualified mechanic to help you out.
