Dragging and dropping is a convenient feature that Mac users use every day to move files and folders around their operating system. However, sometimes this feature may stop working, leaving users frustrated and in need of a fix. Here are some tips for how to fix drag and drop not working on Mac.

1. Restart your Mac

A simple solution to the problem may be to restart your Mac. This will often clear any issues that are preventing the drag and drop function from working correctly. To restart your Mac, click on the Apple menu icon in the top left corner of your screen, select “Restart” from the dropdown menu, and wait for your Mac to turn back on.

2. Reset your Finder preferences

Your computer’s Finder preferences control how the Finder behaves when folders and files are dropped on them. To reset your Finder preferences, go to “Finder” in the top menu bar and select “Preferences.” Within the Finder Preferences menu, click on the “Advanced” tab, and then click on the “Reset” button. This should refresh your Finder preferences and resolve any issues with your drag and drop function.

3. Check your user account permissions

Sometimes your user account permissions can become corrupted, leading to issues with the drag and drop feature. To check your user account permissions, go to “System Preferences” and click on “Users & Groups.” From there, select your username and then click on the “Login Items” tab. Check the list of applications that automatically start up when you log in to your user account and remove any that may be causing the issue. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, try creating a new user account and copying your files and folders over to the new account.

4. Disable third-party plugins and extensions

Third-party plugins and extensions can also cause issues with the drag and drop function. To disable these plugins and extensions, go to “System Preferences” and select “Extensions.” From there, turn off any extensions or plugins that you suspect may be causing the issue, and then restart your Mac.

5. Run a disk utility scan

Running a disk utility scan can help identify and fix any damages or errors on your system’s hard drive that may be causing the drag and drop function to fail. To run a disk utility scan, go to “Applications > Utilities” and open the “Disk Utility” application. Select your hard drive and click on “First Aid” to initiate a scan. If any errors or damages are found, click on “Repair” to fix them.

In conclusion, drag and drop not working can be an annoying problem for Mac users. However, by following these simple steps, you can quickly resolve the issue and get back to your workflow. If none of these steps work, consider seeking help from a professional to identify and fix the issue.
