How to Finger Knit

Finger knitting is a fun, easy, and relaxing hobby that allows you to create beautiful and versatile projects without the need for any knitting needles. Whether you’re an experienced crafter or new to the world of knitting, this technique is a fantastic way to dive in and start making something special. In this article, we’ll take you through the process of finger knitting step by step, so you can begin your journey into this delightful craft.

1. Gather Your Materials

The only item you’ll need for finger knitting is yarn – any type will do, but a bulkier yarn will produce thicker and warmer items. Once you’ve chosen your yarn, make sure to wind it up into a ball for easy handling during the knitting process.

2. Create a Slipknot

To begin finger knitting, start by forming a slipknot. Hold the end of your yarn in one hand and make a loop with the other. Bring the working yarn (the part attached to your ball) over the top of the loop and pull it through from behind to create a slipknot.

3. Loop Your Fingers

Place the slipknot over your index finger on your non-dominant hand – this will act as your first stitch. Tighten it just enough so that it’s secure but not too tight, as this can lead to discomfort or difficulty when pulling loops through.

With the working yarn at the back of your hand, weave it over your middle finger and under your ring finger, then over your little finger. Next, bring it back towards your index finger, weaving over your little finger and under both your ring and middle fingers.

Repeat this process once more so that you have two loops on each finger.

4. Begin Knitting

Starting with your little finger and working towards your index finger, grab the bottom loop on each digit and pull it over the top loop and then off your finger. Don’t be afraid to let the loops extend slightly – this will prevent the finished item from being too tight.

Repeat this step with your ring, middle, and index fingers, leaving you with one loop on each finger. This completes one row of finger knitting.

5. Continue Knitting

To knit subsequent rows, return to Step 3 and weave the working yarn over and under your fingers to create two loops per digit once more. Then, proceed to Step 4, lifting the bottom loops over the top ones and off your fingers.

By repeating these two steps, you’ll create a long chain that forms the base of your finger knitting project. Keep going until your project reaches your desired length or until you’re running low on yarn.

6. Finishing Your Project

Once you’ve reached your desired length or run out of yarn, cut the working yarn, leaving a tail of approximately six inches. To bind off, start with your little finger and carefully slip the remaining loop onto the next finger (your ring finger). Then, lift the bottom loop up and over as you’ve been doing throughout the project.

Repeat this process with your middle and index fingers. Once you’re left with just one loop on your index finger, thread the tail through that final loop and pull tightly to secure it – this is known as fastening off.

Congratulations! You now know how to finger knit! This step-by-step guide should have provided a solid foundation for starting your first finger knitting project. As you practice this craft more, consider experimenting with different types of yarn or combining multiple strands together for exciting new designs. The sky is truly the limit when it comes to creativity in finger knitting!
