How to File Squoval Nails: 10 Steps

Filing your nails in a squoval shape is an excellent way to achieve a versatile, modern look. Squoval nails embody the best of both worlds, combining the elegance of square-shaped nails with the softness of oval-shaped nails. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to file squoval nails.

1. Gather the needed tools: To get started, you’ll need a nail file, nail buffer, clippers or scissors, cuticle oil, and a nail brush.

2. Prepare your nails: Remove old nail polish and clean your hands with soap and water. Pat your hands dry and gently push back your cuticles with an orange stick or cuticle pusher.

3. Trim your nails: To achieve a uniform length, use nail clippers or scissors to trim all your nails to approximately the same length.

4. Choose your filing tool: Select a fine-grained nail file for natural nails or a more abrasive file for acrylic or gel nails.

5. Start filing from the sidewalls: Position your file in a straight line along one sidewall (the area where the nail meets the skin) and file toward the center of the nail’s tip in one direction.

6. Repeat on the other side: Switch to the other sidewall and file toward the center once again; doing this will help you create the straight edges of the squared-off shape.

7. Create an angled corner: Hold your file at a 45-degree angle from where the sidewall meets the tip of the nail and gently file each corner toward the middle of the nail tip. The goal is to create slightly curved corners that lead into smooth transitions between straight edges.

8. Smooth out transitions: With gentle, outward strokes, use your file to round out any sharp transitions among edges until you have achieved a softened square shape that resembles an oval on each corner.

9. Buff your nails: Use a nail buffer to gently smooth out any remaining rough spots on your nails, ensuring that the edges are smooth and snag-free.

10. Final touches: Clean your nails with a nail brush to remove any debris and apply cuticle oil to moisturize your cuticles. Finish off with your favorite nail polish, and you’re all set!

With these ten straightforward steps, you’ll master the art of filing squoval nails in no time. Enjoy this blend of chic and subtle, which is perfect for any occasion!
