Feeding laying hens the proper nutrients is essential to ensure they are healthy, happy, and producing high-quality eggs. Follow these 11 steps to ensure your laying hens are receiving the best possible nutrition:

1. Choose the correct feed: Purchase a good quality layer feed specifically designed for laying hens. These feeds contain the necessary nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that the hens need for optimal egg production.

2. Provide grit: Grit is an essential addition to a hen’s diet as it aids in proper digestion. You can either offer it in a separate container or mix it into their regular feed.

3. Offer calcium supplements: Calcium is crucial for strong eggshells. Provide your hens with crushed oyster shells or ground limestone in a separate container, allowing them to eat as much as they need.

4. Ensure fresh water daily: Clean water is essential for healthy chickens. Refresh and clean their water containers daily, ensuring that they always have access to fresh water.

5. Maintain a consistent feeding schedule: Feed your hens once or twice a day at the same time each day. This will help reduce stress and keep their feeding routine consistent.

6. Limit treats: While treats like fruits, vegetables, and grains can be beneficial in small amounts, overfeeding can unbalance their diet and result in poor egg production. Aim to keep treats at 10% or less of their overall intake.

7. Monitor body weight and adjust accordingly: Regularly check your hens’ body condition to ensure they are not overweight or underweight; adjust their feed intake as needed.

8. Provide ample space for feeding: Ensure there is enough feeder space for all your birds to eat comfortably without competition.

9. Keep feeders clean: To prevent mold growth, regularly clean your chickens’ feeders with warm soapy water and dry them thoroughly before refilling.

10. Avoid feeding moldy or spoiled food: Moldy and spoiled food can cause illness in your hens. Always provide fresh, high-quality feed and discard any moldy or spoiled food promptly.

11. Monitor egg production and quality: Regularly check your hens’ egg production and note any drops in production levels or changes in egg quality. Adjust their diet and care as needed to resolve any issues you encounter.

By following these 11 steps, you can ensure your laying hens are receiving the proper nutrition necessary to produce high-quality eggs. Happy, healthy chickens make for happy farmers!
