How to Enable Automated Captions in Zoom
Enabling automated captions in Zoom can significantly improve accessibility for participants who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as those who prefer visual communication. Here’s a step-by-step guide to turning on this useful feature.
To enable automated captions in Zoom, follow these instructions:
1. Sign in to your Zoom account on the Zoom website.
2. Navigate to ‘Settings’ and then click on the ‘Meeting’ tab.
3. In the Meetings settings, scroll down until you find the ‘In Meeting (Advanced)’ section.
4. Look for an option labeled ‘Closed captioning’.
5. Make sure that the ‘Closed captioning’ setting is enabled. If it is not, click the toggle to turn it on.
6. You will also see an option to “Enable live transcription service to transcribe meeting automatically.” Click the toggle next to it so that participants will have the option to view a live transcript.
7. Once you have enabled closed captioning and live transcription, remember to save your settings.
During a meeting:
1. As the host, start your scheduled Zoom meeting.
2. Click on ‘Live Transcript’ in the Zoom toolbar at the bottom of the meeting window.
3. Select ‘Enable Auto-Transcription’.
Participants can now choose to see live captions during the meeting by clicking on the ‘CC’ button in their toolbar and selecting ‘Show Subtitle’.
Keep in mind that automated captions might not always be 100% accurate, but they can generally provide a good level of understanding and improve accessibility for attendees. Always check if there are updates from Zoom as they are continuously improving their services and features.
