How to Draw a Dolphin: 14 Steps
Step 1: Gather your materials
Choose the drawing tools you prefer—such as pencils, drawing pens, or digital software. Get your paper or tablet ready and make sure you have an eraser handy to fix any mistakes.
Step 2: Research dolphin anatomy
To better understand the shape and proportions of a dolphin, research their anatomy by studying photographs or illustrations. Pay attention to key features such as their body shape, dorsal fin, tail fins, and snout.
Step 3: Sketch a basic outline
Lightly draw an oval for the body, with a slightly elongated and pointed shape for the dolphin’s snout. This will serve as your basic guide.
Step 4: Add guidelines
Draw one horizontal and one vertical line across the oval. This will help you place key features in the correct positions.
Step 5: Draw the head
Refine the shape of the head by drawing a gentle curve along the snout, adding details such as eyes, mouth, nostrils (blowhole), and even facial expressions if desired.
Step 6: Draw the dorsal fin
Sketch a triangular dorsal fin about halfway down the dolphin’s back. Make sure it’s curved towards the back for a more natural look.
Step 7: Add pectoral fins
On either side of the body, near the base of the head, draw two curved pectoral fins that resemble flippers.
Step 8: Sketch in the tailbone
Draw a slightly curved line extending from both sides of the bottom end of the oval. This will create the tailbone structure for your dolphin.
Step 9: Create tail fins
Add two curved tail fins (flukes) at each end of the tailbone, keeping them symmetrical in size. Make sure they mirror each other in shape as well.
Step 10: Erase unnecessary lines
Using your eraser, remove the guidelines and any unwanted marks from the oval, leaving only your refined sketch of the dolphin.
Step 11: Add detail to the body
Add lines or shading along the dolphin’s body to represent its unique skin pattern, as well as details around the fins and tail for a more realistic look.
Step 12: Shade your drawing
Use subtle shading techniques to create depth and texture in your dolphin drawing. You can use gradients or hatching strokes to give a three-dimensional appearance.
Step 13: Add a background (optional)
If you’d like to place your dolphin in a specific environment, such as under the sea or swimming with other marine life, draw in a suitable background.
Step 14: Finalize your drawing
Go over your entire drawing with darker pen strokes if needed. Make any final adjustments or touch-ups and sign your work. Congratulations, you’ve drawn a dolphin!
Follow these 14 steps, and you’ll have a fantastic dolphin drawing that showcases your understanding of their anatomy and captures their beautiful, streamlined shapes. Practice regularly to further develop and improve your drawing skills.
