YouTube is the world’s largest video sharing platform and home to billions of videos on a wide range of topics. However, some users may want to download certain YouTube videos for offline viewing, editing, or sharing purposes. If you’re a Linux user and want to download YouTube videos, you’re in luck. There are plenty of ways to download YouTube videos on Linux and in this article, we’ll explore some of the popular and reliable methods.

Method 1: Using a Web service

There are plenty of websites that allow you to download YouTube videos by simply entering the video URL. These websites work on Linux as well as other platforms and are easy to use. Here’s how:

Step 1: Open your browser on Linux and go to a website like “y2mate.com” or “savefrom.net.”

Step 2: Copy the YouTube video URL from the address bar or by clicking on the “share” button below the video.

Step 3: Paste the URL in the field provided on the website and click on the “download” button.

Step 4: Choose the video quality and format and click on the download button again.

Note: Make sure that you’re downloading videos for personal use and not violating any copyright laws.

Method 2: Using youtube-dl command-line utility

If you prefer the command-line interface and want to download videos in bulk, the youtube-dl utility is a great choice. It is open-source and supports a wide range of video sites including YouTube. Here’s how to install and use it on Linux:

Step 1: Open the terminal on Linux and enter the following command to install youtube-dl:

sudo apt-get install youtube-dl

Step 2: Enter the youtube-dl command followed by the YouTube video URL. For example:

youtube-dl https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

Step 3: The video will start downloading and will be saved in your current directory.

Note: You can also use youtube-dl to download entire playlists or channels.

Method 3: Using a browser extension like Video DownloadHelper

Another option is to use a browser extension like Video DownloadHelper. It is available for popular browsers like Firefox, Chrome, and Edge and allows you to download YouTube videos with just one click. Here’s how to use it:

Step 1: Go to the Video DownloadHelper website and install the extension for your browser.

Step 2: When you’re on a YouTube video page, click on the Video DownloadHelper icon next to the address bar.

Step 3: Choose the video quality and format and click on the download button.

Conclusion:

Downloading YouTube videos on Linux is easy and there are plenty of options to choose from. Whether you prefer a web service, command-line utility, or a browser extension, you can easily download your favorite videos and watch them offline. However, make sure that you’re downloading videos for personal use only and not violating any copyright laws.
