Tashlich is a Jewish ritual performed during the High Holy Days, specifically on Rosh Hashanah or during the ten days of repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It is a symbolic ceremony where participants cast off their sins by throwing pieces of bread or other biodegradable materials into flowing water. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to perform Tashlich.

1. Choose the right day: Tashlich is commonly performed on the afternoon of Rosh Hashanah, but can also be done anytime until Yom Kippur. Check with your temple or community for the specific date.

2. Pick a location: Find a body of flowing water, such as a river, stream, or ocean. The water must be moving so it can symbolically “carry away” your sins.

3. Bring bread crumbs or another biodegradable material: Bread crumbs are traditionally used to represent sins, but you can also use pebbles, leaves, or other small items that won’t harm the environment.

4. Reflect on your actions: Before approaching the water, take time to think about any wrongdoing you’ve committed over the past year. Stay introspective as you approach the water.

5. Recite the Tashlich prayer: Begin by reciting the Tashlich prayer as you face the water. It begins with the words “Who is like unto thee, O God..” and continues with various passages from Psalms.

6. Lift and separate bread crumbs: Hold your bread crumbs in your hands and divide them into small pieces while reflecting on each mistake represented by an individual piece.

7. Say a personal prayer: You may add your own words of contrition and requests for forgiveness in addition to the traditional prayers if desired.

8. Cast off your sins: Throw your bread crumbs or other biodegradable materials into the water, symbolizing the cleansing of your sins.

9. Meditate on your actions: As you watch your “sins” float away, take a moment to contemplate how you wish to avoid repeating these behaviors in the coming year.

10. Recite closing prayers: Say any concluding prayers with your community or on your own, as per your personal practice or tradition.

11. Depart in peace: After you complete the ceremony, leave the area quietly and with a renewed commitment to self-improvement.

By following these 11 steps, you can experience the powerful and healing ritual of Tashlich. Reflecting on your past mistakes and actively seeking forgiveness is a vital part of personal growth and spiritual development during the High Holy Days.
