How to Do Quilling: 10 Steps

Quilling, also known as paper filigree, is a beautiful and intricate art form that involves rolling, shaping, and gluing strips of paper to create decorative designs. Whether you’re new to quilling or simply looking to refine your technique, here are ten steps to help you master the craft.
1. Gather your materials: To start quilling, you’ll need a quilling tool (a slotted tool, needle tool, or even a toothpick), strips of paper (quilling paper or cut your own), glue, tweezers, a work surface (such as a corkboard, foam board, or wax paper), and pins.
2. Choose the right paper: Quilling paper comes in various widths and colors. Beginners usually find 1/8-inch (3mm) wide strips easiest to handle. The choice of colors is up to you and depends on the design you want to create.
3. Prepare your work surface: Place wax paper, corkboard, or foam board on a flat surface. You can also use a quilling template or grid if desired.
4. Begin rolling the paper: Hold the quilling tool in one hand and slip the end of the paper strip into the slot or hole. Keep even tension on the strip as you roll it around the tool. The coil should be tight and even.
5. Shape the coil: Once you’ve rolled the paper strip into a coil, gently release it from the tool and let it expand slightly. Pinch or manipulate the coil with your fingers or tweezers to create different shapes like teardrop, marquise, square, and more.
6. Apply glue: Using a toothpick or fine brush, apply glue sparingly to the end of the strip before pressing it against the coil’s edge to secure it in place.
7. Create your design: Plan out your design before you begin gluing the pieces to your work surface. You can draw the outline of the design on your working surface or use printed patterns available online or in quilling books.
8. Assemble the quilled pieces: Starting at one end of your design, carefully glue each quilled shape onto your work surface. Use tweezers to help with placement and precision.
9. Fill in the spaces: Once the main elements of your design are complete, go back in and fill any gaps or spaces with more quilled shapes, adding texture and depth to your work.
10. Display your art: After allowing ample time for the glue to dry, remove any pins if used, and gently peel your artwork from the work surface. Frame or mount as desired for a beautiful finished piece.
With a little practice and patience, you’ll soon create stunning quilled art, perfect for personal enjoyment or thoughtful gifts. Happy quilling!
