How to Do an Underhand Serve: 12 Steps

An underhand serve is an essential skill in sports like volleyball, tennis, and badminton. It’s a simple yet effective serving technique that can easily throw off your opponent while giving you better control over the ball. Here are 12 steps to help you perfect the art of an underhand serve.

1. Choose your dominant hand: Decide which hand you feel more comfortable using for serving, usually the one you write with.

2. Position yourself: Stand behind the baseline and at least 2 feet from the sideline with your feet shoulder-width apart. Angle your body, so it’s facing slightly across the court in the desired direction of your serve.

3. Grip the ball correctly: With your non-dominant hand, hold the ball at waist height with fingers spread out to evenly support it.

4. Properly position serving arm: Bend your dominant arm at the elbow and place your hand on your hip or side with fingers pointing towards the ground.

5. Set up the striking stance: Shift your weight onto your back foot (the one opposite to the serving arm).

6. Begin swinging motion: As you start moving your weight forward, bring your dominant arm down by bending at the elbow, then sweep it backward and slightly upward into a pendulum motion.

7. Look at the target: Keep your eyes on the spot where you want the ball to land on the opponent’s court.

8. Make contact with the ball: While swinging forward, strike the ball with a flat palm when your arm is fully extended but still slightly bent at the elbow.

9. Follow through with proper form: After contact, let both arms naturally follow through in a C-shaped motion—ending up on the opposite side of their starting positions—to maximize power and control over all aspects of this technique.

10. Maintain balance throughout serve: Proper balance is crucial for accurate execution. Keep your knees slightly bent and body weight evenly distributed so you can quickly shift into a defensive stance after serving.

11. Practice, practice, practice: As with any skill, consistent practice is the key to mastering an underhand serve. Spend time working on different strategies and adjusting your technique until it feels natural and efficient.

12. Develop consistency: Work on developing consistent force and accuracy with your serve, which will make it difficult for opponents to predict or return the ball.

Mastering these 12 steps will equip you with an underhand serve that gives you the edge over your competition. Whether you’re playing for fun or participating in competitive sports, remember to stay patient and committed as you develop your technique – practice makes perfect!
