How to Do a Twist Out: 13 Steps

Introduction: A twist out is a popular hairstyle among natural hair enthusiasts, as it allows you to achieve the look of soft, defined curls without using heat or chemicals. In this article, we will guide you through 13 easy steps to create your own gorgeous twist out.

Step 1: Start with clean hair

Wash and condition your hair with products designed for your hair type to ensure it is clean and free of any buildup or residue.

Step 2: Detangle your hair

Gently detangle your hair using a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush, working in sections from the tips to the roots.

Step 3: Apply leave-in conditioner

Apply a leave-in conditioner to your damp hair to help lock in moisture and provide extra protection during the styling process.

Step 4: Section your hair

Divide your hair into four equal sections and secure each section with a hair clip to make it easier to manage while twisting.

Step 5: Apply styling product

Apply your favorite curl defining cream, gel, or mousse evenly throughout each section of your hair.

Step 6: Decide on the size of your twists

The size of your twists will determine how tight or loose your curls will be. Smaller twists will give you tighter curls while larger twists will provide looser curls. Choose the size that works best for your desired look.

Step 7: Start twisting

Take one section of hair and divide it into smaller subsections depending on the chosen twist size. Hold one subsection at its base and begin twisting the two strands around each other tightly until you reach the ends of the strands.

Step 8: Secure twists at their ends

To prevent unraveling, secure the ends of each twist with a small rubber band or by twirling them around your finger for a few seconds to encourage them to coil up.

Step 9: Repeat the process

Continue twisting each section of hair until your entire head is complete.

Step 10: Allow twists to dry

Let your twists air dry, or speed up the process by sitting under a hooded dryer. It’s essential that your twists are completely dry before moving on to the next step; otherwise, your twist out may not hold its shape.

Step 11: Unravel the twists

Once your twists are completely dry, gently unravel them by twirling each twist in the opposite direction that it was initially twisted. Be gentle to avoid creating frizz.

Step 12: Separate for volume

If you’d like more volume, carefully separate each unraveled twist into smaller sections while maintaining the curl pattern.

Step 13: Style and finish

Use an afro pick or wide-tooth comb to lift at the roots for additional volume, and lay down any edges with a small amount of edge control gel. Finish off with a light mist of hairspray for extra hold.

And there you have it! With these 13 easy steps, you can create a beautiful twist out that showcases your natural curls. Enjoy experimenting with this versatile style and embrace your gorgeous curls.
