How to Do a Forward Roll: 10 Steps

A forward roll is a basic gymnastics skill that is not only fun but also an excellent way to increase your balance and coordination. Here are 10 steps to help you master the forward roll:
1. Warm up: Begin by stretching your muscles, especially in your neck, shoulders, and back. Light cardio exercises like jogging or jumping jacks will also help prepare your body for the movement.
2. Find a soft surface: Make sure you practice on a soft surface, such as a mat or padded floor, to avoid injury.
3. Start in a standing position: Stand straight with your feet shoulder-width apart and arms extended overhead.
4. Bend forward: Slowly bend forward from the waist while keeping your arms straight above your head. Tuck your chin into your chest and keep gazing at your stomach area.
5. Squat down: Lower yourself into a squat position with your hands placed flat on the floor in front of you, shoulder-width apart. Keep tucking your chin to protect your head during the roll.
6. Kick off with your legs: Push off with your legs while keeping both feet together, allowing the momentum to carry you forward.
7. Tuck and roll: As you move forward, bring your knees toward your chest and pass the weight of your body onto your hands and then onto your shoulders. Make sure not to land on top of your head – it should be more of a shoulder roll rather than rolling on the top of your head.
8. Guide the roll with your hands: Use the pressure on both palms of the hands to help guide yourself through the roll for control and balance.
8. Straighten out: As you come out of the roll, start extending both legs together and return them to their initial position before touching down, complete it like landing on a lunge.
9. Finish in standing position: Stand up straight, with your arms still extended overhead, and return to the original starting position.
