How to Cut Pears: 14 Steps

Pears are a delicious and versatile fruit; they’re great for snacking, to add in salads or use in desserts. However, cutting pears can be tricky if you don’t know the proper technique. This step-by-step guide will show you how to cut pears with precision and ease.

Step 1: Choose the right pear

Select a ripe pear depending on your preference for texture and flavor. A ripe pear will yield slightly to gentle pressure near the stem.

Step 2: Wash the pear

Rinse the pear under cold water to remove any dirt or debris, then pat it dry with a paper towel.

Step 3: Place on a cutting board

Using a stable cutting surface, place the pear on its side.

Step 4: Remove the stem

Cut off a small portion at the top of the pear where the stem is attached, leaving a flat surface.

Step 5: Remove the base

Slice off an equal portion from the bottom of the pear, creating another flat surface. This helps stabilize the pear for further cutting.

Step 6: Cut vertically

With your knife perpendicular to the cutting board, slice down through the center of your pear, cutting it into two equal halves.

Step 7: Remove the core

Using a spoon or melon baller, scoop out the core from each half of the pear by scooping in circular motions around where seeds are located.

Step 8: Decide on size

Determine what size you want your pear slices or chunks to be; this will depend on your intended use for them.

Step 9: Slice lengthwise

Working with one-half of the pear at a time, lay it flat side down and make even slices lengthwise. For thinner slices, make more cuts; for thicker pieces, make fewer cuts.

Step 10: Cut crosswise

If you want to make pear chunks, cut each slice crosswise, creating smaller pieces.

Step 11: Repeat with the remaining half

Repeat steps 9 and 10 with the other half of the pear.

Step 12: Prevent browning (optional)

To prevent pear slices from turning brown, toss them in a mixture of water and lemon juice right after you’ve finished cutting them—this will slow down the oxidation process that causes browning.

Step 13: Store properly

Store cut pears in an airtight container or plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Step 14: Enjoy!

Enjoy your perfectly cut pears as a refreshing snack, added to your favorite recipes, or incorporated into a range of dishes—from sweet to savory.

By following these steps, you will be able to cut pears with ease and confidence. Now you can enjoy this tasty fruit in all its beautifully sliced forms.
