Butternut squash is a delicious and nutritious vegetable that can be used in a variety of recipes. However, its thick skin and tough interior can make it difficult to cut and prepare. With the proper steps, tools, and techniques, you can easily cut butternut squash with confidence. Follow these 12 steps to learn how to cut butternut squash like a pro.

1. Gather the necessary tools: You will need a sharp chef’s knife, cutting board, vegetable peeler, large spoon, and a dish towel or damp paper towel.

2. Wash the squash: Thoroughly rinse the butternut squash under running water to remove any dirt or debris from the surface.

3. Create a stable cutting surface: Place the dish towel or damp paper towel on the counter underneath your cutting board to prevent it from slipping while you work.

4. Remove the top and bottom: Using your chef’s knife, carefully trim off about 1/4 inch from both the stem end and the bottom end of the squash.

5. Cut in half lengthwise: Stand the squash upright on one of its flat ends. Carefully slice it down the middle lengthwise into two equal halves.

6. Scoop out the seeds: Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and fibrous strands from the cavity of each half. Discard these or save them for roasting if desired.

7. Peel the skin off: Using a vegetable peeler or sharp paring knife, remove the tough outer skin from each half of the butternut squash.

8. Cut halves into quarters: Lay each peeled half flat on your cutting board, then slice them in half lengthwise again to create four long quarters.

9. Slice quarters into manageable sections: Crosscut each quarter into approximately 1-2 inch wide sections depending on desired size for recipes.

10. Cube the squash: Lay each section flat on your cutting board, and cut it into 1-2 inch wide strips lengthwise. Then, make crosswise cuts to create evenly sized cubes.

11. Check squash for uniformity: Examine the cut squash to ensure all pieces are roughly the same size. This will lead to even cooking in your recipes.

12. Store or cook as needed: Place the cut butternut squash in a covered container and store it in the refrigerator for up to five days, or use it immediately in your favorite recipe.

By following these simple steps and using the right tools, cutting butternut squash becomes a breeze. With practice and confidence, you’ll be well on your way to incorporating this delicious and versatile vegetable into your cooking repertoire.
