How to Cook Rice Over a Fire: 8 Steps
Cooking rice over a fire can be a fun and satisfying experience if you know the right steps to follow. This method adds a delicious, smoky flavor to your rice and is perfect for camping trips or outdoor gatherings. Here are eight simple steps to cook rice over a fire.
1. Gather the necessary tools and ingredients:
– A pot with a tight-fitting lid
– A metal trivet or grate
– Firewood and fire starter
– Water
– Rice (white or brown)
– Salt (optional)
2. Build your fire:
Choose a safe, suitable location away from trees, buildings, and flammable materials. Stack your firewood in a teepee shape, placing the fire starter at the center. Ignite the fire starter and allow the fire to become well-established.
3. Set your cooking surface:
Place the metal trivet or grate over the fire, leaving enough space for air circulation.
4. Rinse the rice:
Rinse your rice under cold water in a fine mesh strainer or sieve until the water runs clear. This step removes excess starch and prevents the rice from clumping together.
5. Combine ingredients in the pot:
Add equal parts of rinsed rice and water to your pot. For example, if you’re cooking one cup of rice, add one cup of water. Add salt if desired.
6. Bring to a boil:
Carefully place the pot on top of the trivet or grate and cover with its lid. Let the water come to a rolling boil – this should take around five minutes depending on your fire’s heat.
7. Adjust heat and simmer:
Once boiling, lift the pot off the grate slightly to lower heat if needed or rearrange some logs to create an even temperature under your pot. Cover again with lid and let it simmer gently for about 18 minutes for white rice or 45 minutes for brown rice. Avoid lifting the lid, as this allows steam to escape and can lead to uneven cooking.
8. Check for doneness and serve:
When the simmering time is up, carefully lift the lid to check if all water has been absorbed. If not, let it cook a few more minutes. Once done, remove the pot from the fire and fluff the rice with a fork. Let it stand covered for a few minutes before serving.
Enjoy your perfectly cooked rice, prepared over an open fire, with family and friends!
