How to Cook Black Quinoa: 13 steps

Cooking black quinoa may seem intimidating, but it’s a simple process that can lead to a delicious and nutritious dish. When cooked properly, black quinoa becomes fluffy and slightly crunchy, making it perfect for salads, side dishes or as a base for your favorite protein. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to cook black quinoa.

1. Measure out the black quinoa: Start with 1 cup of dry black quinoa, which is enough to make about 3 cups cooked.

2. Rinse the quinoa: Place the quinoa in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse well under cold running water for about 1-2 minutes. This will help remove any bitter taste caused by saponins, natural compounds found in quinoa seeds.

3. Drain the quinoa: After rinsing, drain the excess water by gently shaking the strainer.

4. Toast the quinoa (optional): To enhance the flavor of your dish, lightly toast the quinoa in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 3-5 minutes until it emits a nutty aroma.

5. Boil water: In a medium-sized saucepan, bring 2 cups of water or broth (for added flavor) to a rolling boil.

6. Add salt (optional): Season the boiling water with ¼ teaspoon of salt to add extra flavor.

7. Add the rinsed and drained quinoa: Stir well to ensure all grains are submerged in liquid.

8. Simmer: Reduce heat to low-medium and let your quinoa simmer gently for about 15-20 minutes or until most of the water has been absorbed.

9. Check for doneness: When your quinoa looks transparent and tender (but still slightly crunchy), it’s ready! You can use a fork or spoon to fluff up any clumps.

10. Remove from heat: Once the quinoa has finished cooking, turn off the heat and let it sit for 5 minutes. This will allow any remaining water to be absorbed and help fluff up the quinoa.

11. Fluff the quinoa: Use a fork to gently fluff your cooked black quinoa and separate any clumps.

12. Season to taste: If you like, you can add extra seasoning like herbs, spices, or even a drizzle of olive oil or lemon juice for added flavor.

13. Enjoy your delicious black quinoa: Serve as a base for salads or bowls, as a side dish along with your favorite protein, or get creative and use it in other recipes!

Now that you know how to cook black quinoa perfectly every time, you can impress your friends and family with a new culinary skill while enjoying its many health benefits!
