Introduction:

Cleaning your shoes can be a hassle, especially if you don’t know the proper techniques to avoid damaging them. One of the most convenient ways to clean your shoes is by throwing them in the washer. However, this method can ruin your footwear if not done correctly. In this article, we will guide you through the process of cleaning your shoes in the washer without damaging them.

Step 1: Check the Label

Before anything else, check the label or manufacturer’s instructions for your shoes to see if they are washer-safe. Some materials may not be suitable for machine washing and require alternative cleaning methods.

Step 2: Remove Laces and Insoles

To ensure a thorough cleaning, remove your shoelaces and insoles before washing. This will also prevent any tangles or damage during the wash cycle. Wash laces separately in a mesh bag or replace them with new ones if they are too worn out.

Step 3: Pre-treat Stubborn Stains

If your shoes have stubborn stains or dirt, pre-treat them using a soft-bristle brush and mild detergent mixed with water. Gently scrub away any dirt or debris before placing them in the washer.

Step 4: Protect Your Shoes

To minimize potential damage during washing, wrap each shoe in a pillowcase or put them in a mesh laundry bag. This will provide extra protection and prevent the shoes from clashing against other items or the walls of the washer.

Step 5: Select Gentle Cycle and Cold Water

When choosing a wash cycle, opt for a gentle setting with cold water. This reduces agitation and prevents colors from bleeding. Add gentle laundry detergent as recommended by your washing machine’s instruction manual.

Step 6: Balance the Washer Load

It’s crucial to maintain balance inside the washer drum when washing shoes. To do this, add a few towels or clothing items of similar weight to the machine. This will ensure even distribution and minimize potential damage.

Step 7: Air-Dry Your Shoes

After the wash cycle is complete, remove your shoes and let them air-dry at room temperature. Avoid using direct heat sources, such as heaters or direct sunlight, as they can warp or shrink your shoes. Use a crumpled newspaper or paper towels to maintain the shape of your shoes while drying.

Conclusion:

Cleaning your shoes in the washer doesn’t have to be a risky endeavor when you follow these simple guidelines. By taking precautions, you can keep your footwear in excellent condition and enjoy fresh, clean shoes without damaging them in the process.
