How to Clean Asphalt Shingles: 12 Steps

Asphalt shingles are a popular choice for roofing materials because they’re affordable, durable, and easy to install. However, just like any other part of your home, asphalt shingles need regular cleaning and maintenance to keep them looking their best and prolong their lifespan. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean asphalt shingles.

1. Safety first: Use proper safety gear such as slip-resistant shoes, gloves, safety glasses, and a safety harness if you will be climbing onto the roof.

2. Check the weather: Choose a cool, cloudy day to clean your asphalt shingles, as direct sunlight may cause the cleaning solution to evaporate quickly.

3. Inspect your roof: Before cleaning the shingles, take a good look at the roof surface for any damage or loose shingles that may need repair.

4. Prepare your cleaning solution: Mix equal parts water and chlorine bleach (or a non-toxic cleaner specifically designed for roofs) in a lawn sprayer or garden pump sprayer.

5. Wet your roof: If possible, use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to wet down the entire roof surface. This will help the cleaning solution soak into the shingles instead of running off.

6. Apply the cleaning solution: Spray your cleaning mixture onto a small section of the roof, starting at the bottom and working your way up.

7. Let it soak: Give the cleaning solution 15-20 minutes to break down grime and algae before moving on to the next step.

8. Scrub gently: Use a soft-bristle brush or broom (never wire brushes or high-pressure power washers) to gently scrub away stains and dirt.

9. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse each section of the roof with clean water from a hose before applying cleaner on another section. Make sure all residue is removed to prevent any streaks or damage to the shingles.

10. Take breaks: Cleaning a roof is labor-intensive. Don’t overwork yourself – take breaks, drink water, and work at a steady pace.

11. Perform regular maintenance: To keep your asphalt shingles looking their best, plan to clean your roof at least once every two years (or more often if necessary).

12. Schedule a professional inspection: It’s a good idea to have a professional roofer inspect and repair your roof as needed to prevent further damage and extend the life of your asphalt shingles.

Now that you know how to clean asphalt shingles, follow these 12 steps to keep your roof looking great and functioning efficiently for years to come. Remember that your safety is the top priority, so don’t hesitate to call a professional if you’re uncomfortable with any part of the process.
