How to Clean a Stone Fireplace: 12 Steps
Step 1: Gather the necessary supplies
Before starting, gather the following materials: a vacuum cleaner, soft-bristle brush, cleaning solution (such as diluted dish soap or white vinegar), bucket of warm water, clean cloth or sponge, and a clean towel.
Step 2: Clear away decorations and furniture
Remove any decorations from around the fireplace and move furniture away to provide ample space for cleaning.
Step 3: Remove ash and debris from the fireplace
Use a vacuum cleaner or dustpan and brush to remove all ash and debris from the interior of the fireplace.
Step 4: Prepare the cleaning solution
In your bucket, mix a solution of equal parts warm water and cleaning agent. If using vinegar, mix one part vinegar to four parts water.
Step 5: Test the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area
Before proceeding, test a small and unnoticeable section of the stone to make sure it won’t cause damage or discoloration.
Step 6: Dust and loosen dirt
With your soft-bristle brush, gently dust off the stone surfaces to remove any loose dirt.
Step 7: Apply cleaning solution
Dip the cloth or sponge into the cleaning solution and wring out excess moisture. Apply the dampened cloth onto the stone surfaces of the fireplace.
Step 8: Scrub gently
Using your soft-bristle brush or sponge, gently scrub dirt and grime in a circular motion on each stone.
Step 9: Rinse
Rinse off the cleaning solution with clean water using another clean cloth or sponge.
Step 10: Dry each stone thoroughly
Using a clean towel, dry each cleaned stone thoroughly to prevent any moisture damage.
Step 11: Reapply if necessary
If you notice stubborn stains, it may be necessary to repeat steps 7-10.
Step 12: Replace decorations and furniture
Once you have completed the cleaning task, put the furniture and decorations back in their original positions.
