How to Clean a Circumcision: 15 Steps

Circumcision is a common surgical procedure in which the foreskin of the penis is removed. Proper careand hygiene are essential to ensure a quick and complication-free healing process. Here are 15 steps toclean a circumcision:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly using soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. This will help prevent the infection by eliminating bacteria and germs from your hands.
2. Prepare a clean workspace with all the necessary supplies like cotton balls, gauze, Betadine solution or saline, antibiotic ointment, clean diaper, and surgical gloves (optional).
3. If you choose to wear surgical gloves, put them on after washing your hands.
4. Dip a cotton ball in the Betadine solution or saline and gently dab it around the circumcision area to clean the wound. Ensure that you do not touch any other surfaces with the same cotton ball.
5. Gently pat dry the area with clean gauze or another cotton ball.
6. Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment prescribed by the doctor around the circumcised area using a clean cotton swab or gauze.
7. If there’s any visible drainage or crusting, use a moistened cotton swab to remove it gently.
8. Change the dressing as instructed by the healthcare provider or when it becomes dirty or wet. To do this, remove any old gauze or dressing from around the penis and discard it in a plastic bag.
9. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for cleaning before reapplying fresh gauze/dressing around the penis.
10. Place your child in a comfortable position and pin the fresh diaper tightly enough to prevent leaks but loosely enough to avoid pressure on the healing circumcision site.
11. Clean your child’s penis after every diaper change during the initial healing period (approximately 7-10 days). After that, the penis can be washed gently with soap and water during baths.
12. Monitor the circumcision site regularly for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, pus-like drainage, or foul odor. If you observe any of these symptoms, consult your doctor immediately.
13. Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids to help them pass urine more comfortably, as this can aid the healing process.
14. If your child is in pain or discomfort after the circumcision, consult your doctor regarding over-the-counter pain relievers or other appropriate medication.
15. Stay in touch with your healthcare provider and follow their advice and instructions for a smooth healing process.
Following these 15 steps will ensure that you clean a circumcision effectively and promote optimal healing. Remember always to consult your healthcare provider if you have any concerns or questions about the care and recovery of your child after circumcision.
