How to Cite Footnotes in MLA: 9 Steps

Footnotes provide a convenient way to give credit to sources or provide additional information without interrupting the flow of your paper. In MLA (Modern Language Association) style, footnotes are used sparingly, with a preference for parenthetical citations. However, sometimes footnotes are necessary for clarification or to cite specialized sources. Follow these nine steps to create footnotes in MLA format:

1. Choose the right moment: Only use footnotes when parenthetical citations aren’t enough or when citing sources that lack page numbers or publication information.

2. Identify the source: Determine the type of source you are citing (book, journal article, website, etc.). This will affect how you format your footnote.

3. Use superscript numbers: In your paper’s main text, insert a superscript number immediately after the relevant information or quotation as a footnote marker. Start with “1” and continue consecutively throughout your paper.

4. Place the footnote at the bottom of the page: Footnotes should be placed at the bottom of the same page where the marker appears in your text.

5. Begin with the right format: Start each footnote with its corresponding superscript number, followed by a period and a space.

6. Cite your source: Provide complete citation information for each footnote based on the type of source:

• For books: Author(s). Title of Book. Publisher, Publication Date.

• For articles: Author(s). “Title of Article.” Title of Journal, volume number, issue number (Publication Date), page numbers.

• For websites: Author(s). “Title of Web Page.” Name of Website, Date of Publication (if available), URL.

7. Add any additional information: This may include annotations explaining your usage of the source, translation notes for foreign-language texts, or any other context necessary for understanding your citation.

8. Separate multiple footnotes: If you have multiple footnotes on a single page, separate them with a single line space.

9. Keep it consistent: Ensure that your footnotes follow the same MLA citation format throughout your paper. Double-check that all components of your citations are accurate and properly formatted.

By following these nine steps, you can correctly cite footnotes in MLA style and ensure that your paper adheres to academic integrity standards.
