How to Check Your EBT Balance: 9 Steps

Introduction:

Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards have made it convenient for those receiving government assistance to purchase groceries and other essentials. Keeping track of your EBT card balance is crucial in managing your monthly expenses and avoiding costly overdraft fees. Here are nine steps on how to check your EBT balance.

1. Locate the customer service phone number:

On the back of your EBT card, you will find a toll-free customer service number. Call this number whenever you need to check your balance or if you have any other card-related inquiries.

2. Register for an online account:

Visit your state’s EBT website to create an online account with a username and password, providing easy access to your balance and transaction history anytime.

3. Download the mobile app:

Many states offer mobile apps where you can quickly check your EBT balance, search for nearby stores that accept EBT, and view transaction history. Download the app from Google Play Store or the Apple App Store and log in using your online account credentials.

4. Check your balance at an ATM:

Some ATMs may allow you to check your EBT balance if they accept the card network logo on the back of the card (e.g., Quest). Insert the card, enter your four-digit personal identification number (PIN), and follow the prompts on the screen.

5. Register for text message updates:

Many states provide an option for text message alerts right after transactions are made or whenever balances reach a certain threshold. To subscribe, check your state’s EBT website or call their customer service line for more information.

6. Use receipts as a reference:

Every time you make a purchase with your EBT card, you should receive a printed receipt displaying the remaining balance after deducting the transaction amount. Keep these receipts handy for future reference.

7. Visit authorized retailers:

Some grocery stores may display EBT balance terminals that allow cardholders to quickly swipe their cards, enter their PIN, and view their balance.

8. Inquire at the cash register:

When using your EBT card at the cash register, you can politely ask the store staff to inform you of your remaining balance after the transaction has been completed.

9. Request a monthly statement:

You can also request a monthly statement of your EBT transactions by contacting your state’s customer service line or accessing your online account.

Conclusion:

It is essential to keep track of your EBT balance to make informed decisions on managing your monthly benefits. By following one or more of these nine steps, you will have quick and easy access to your account information whenever needed.
