Calculating the run and rise of stairs is an essential aspect of construction, especially when designing a staircase suitable for your home or building. Understanding these measurements not only ensures safety but also makes for easier navigation and better aesthetics. In this article, we will discuss how to calculate the run and rise of stairs in a step-by-step approach.

What are Run and Rise?

Before diving into the calculations, it’s important to understand what run and rise mean in terms of stair construction. The run refers to the horizontal distance between two consecutive stair nosings. In simpler terms, it’s the total length required for your foot to step from one stair to another comfortably.

The rise, on the other hand, refers to the vertical distance between two consecutive steps or the height you need to lift your foot from one step to another.

Step-by-step guide on calculating run and rise

Step 1: Determine your total elevation

First, measure the total elevation from where you’d like your staircase to start (the floor) to where you’d like it to end (typically, this is at a higher floor). This measurement will allow you to assess how many steps you will need.

Step 2: Calculate the ideal number of steps

You’ll need to determine how many steps are necessary for proper accessibility and comfort. The average riser height should be between 6-8 inches (around 15-20 cm). To calculate the number of steps required, divide your total elevation by the desirable riser height. Round off the results for a whole number.

Total elevation ÷ desirable riser height = number of steps

Step 3: Calculate actual riser height

Now that you have rounded off the number of steps needed, it’s time to calculate the actual riser height by dividing your total elevation by this rounded-up number:

Total elevation ÷ number of steps = actual riser height

Step 4: Determine the run or tread depth

The tread depth, or run, should typically range between 10-12 inches (25-30 cm). A wider tread depth provides better comfort and enjoyable walking experience. Keep in mind that public spaces might have specific building codes for minimum tread depth.

Step 5: Calculate the total run of the stairs

To determine the total length required for your staircase, simply multiply the number of steps by the desired tread depth.

Total run = number of steps × desired tread depth

Conclusion

Calculating the run and rise of stairs is an essential step in creating a comfortable and safe staircase. With this guide, you should now be able to quickly and easily calculate these important measurements for your next construction project. And remember, always refer to local building codes when designing a staircase to ensure compliance with safety standards.
