Retention rate is a vital metric for businesses. It tells you how successful your company is in keeping talented employees over time. A high retention rate implies better employee satisfaction, lower turnover, and better organizational stability. In this article, we will discuss the steps to calculate the retention rate of employees.

Step 1: Define the Time Period

First, choose the time period for which you want to calculate the retention rate. It can be monthly, quarterly, or yearly. The time period you select should align with your organization’s goals and reporting requirements.

Step 2: Determine Employee Count at the Start and End of the Period

Count the number of employees at the beginning (A) and end (B) of the chosen time period. Exclude new hires during this timeframe, as they do not contribute to employee retention.

Step 3: Calculate Number of Employees Retained

Now that you have both starting and ending employee counts, subtract the number of employees who left during that period in order to determine the number of retained employees (C).

C = B + Number of Employees who left during period

Step 4: Calculate Retention Rate

Finally, divide the number of retained employees (C) by the initial number of employees (A). Multiply this by 100 to convert it into a percentage.

Retention Rate = (C / A) * 100

Example:

Let’s assume you want to calculate your company’s annual retention rate for 2021.

1. Time Period: January 1st, 2021 – December 31st, 2021

2. Employee count at the start (A): 100

3. Employee count at the end (B): 90

4. Number of employees who left during this period: 15

5. Number of retained employees (C): 75 (90 + 15)

6. Retention Rate: (75 / 100) * 100 = 75%

So, the retention rate for your company in 2021 is 75%.

Conclusion

Calculating retention rate is essential for businesses to assess their success in employee engagement and satisfaction. It helps identify any workforce-related issues and develop strategies for improvement. By following the steps mentioned above, measuring the retention rate becomes easy and accurate.
