Understanding how to calculate percentages is an essential skill necessary for many aspects of life, whether it’s for determining discounts, calculating grades, or performing financial calculations. In this article, we will walk you through the process of calculating percentages step-by-step.

What is a percentage?

A percentage represents a fraction with a denominator of 100. In other words, it’s a way to express one quantity as a proportion (or ratio) of another quantity using 100 as a common scale.

1. Understanding the basic percentage formula:

The most straightforward percentage calculation formula is:

Percentage = (Part / Whole) * 100

Here, the “Part” is the specific quantity you’re looking to find the percentage for, and the “Whole” represents the total amount or value in consideration.

2. Calculating percentages from fractions:

To convert a fraction to a percentage, divide the numerator by the denominator and then multiply by 100. For example:

Fraction: 3/4

Percentage = (3 ÷ 4) * 100 = 0.75 * 100 = 75%

In this case, 3/4 equates to a 75% proportion.

3. Calculating percentages of values:

Follow these steps when calculating the percentage of a particular value within another value:

Step 1: Divide the specific value (Part) by the total amount (Whole).

Step 2: Multiply the result by 100.

Example:

Let’s say you scored 45 points on a test out of a possible 60 points.

Percentage = (45 / 60) * 100 = (0.75) * 100 = 75%

You achieved a score of 75% on the test.

4. Finding percentages when given two values:

Sometimes you may be given two numbers and asked to find what percentage one number is of another.

Example:

What percentage is 30 of 150?

Percentage = (30 / 150) * 100 = (0.2) * 100 = 20%

30 is 20% of 150.

5. Calculating percentage increases or decreases:

To find the percentage increase or decrease between two numbers, follow these steps:

Step 1: Subtract the lower number from the higher number to find the difference.

Step 2: Divide the difference by the original value.

Step 3: Multiply the result by 100.

Example:

An item originally cost $80 but is now on sale for $60. To calculate the percentage decrease:

Difference = $80 – $60 = $20

Percentage Decrease = ($20 / $80) * 100 = (0.25) * 100 = 25%

The price has decreased by 25%.

Now that you have a better understanding of how to calculate percentages in various scenarios, you can confidently apply this knowledge to real-life situations. Keep practicing, and soon calculating percentages will become second nature!
