Understanding how to calculate the percentage of a number is an essential skill in various aspects of life, whether you’re calculating discounts, tax, or simply trying to understand statistics. In this article, we will explain the method to calculate percentages with ease.

1. Understand the basics of percentages:

Before diving into calculations, it’s crucial to understand what a percentage is. A percentage is a fraction where the denominator (the number below the line) is 100. In other words, percentages represent parts per hundred.

For instance, 50% means 50 out of 100 parts, or simply half, while 10% denotes 10 out of 100 parts, which is one-tenth (1/10).

2. Converting percentages to decimals:

To efficiently calculate the percentage of a number, you’ll first need to convert the percentage to a decimal. This step is straightforward – just divide the given percentage by 100.

For example, if you want to find 20% of a number:

20% / 100 = 0.2

3. Multiply the decimal by the number:

Now that you have the decimal equivalent of your percentage (in our example, 0.2), multiply it by the number you want to find the percentage of.

For instance, let’s find 20% of 150:

0.2 (decimal equivalent) * 150 (number) = 30

Hence, 20% of 150 is equal to 30.

4. Longer calculations with multiple steps:

In some cases, you might need to perform calculations in multiple steps involving various percentages or operations. By following the two main steps described above – converting percentages to decimals and multiplying them by respective numbers – you can efficiently solve more complex problems.

For example:

Calculate a price after a discount:

Original Price: $200

Discount: 15%

Discounted Price: ?

First, convert the discount percentage to a decimal:

15% / 100 = 0.15

Next, multiply the decimal (0.15) by the original price to find the amount you save:

0.15 * $200 = $30

Now, subtract the saved amount from the original price to find the discounted price:

$200 – $30 = $170

Hence, the discounted price is $170.

With these simple steps and a basic understanding of percentages, you can quickly calculate percentages of any number without hassle. Practice makes perfect, so try different calculation exercises to improve your skills and make this process easier over time.
