Calc is an open-source spreadsheet application that comes with LibreOffice suite and many users find it as an excellent alternative to well-known  spreadsheet applications such as Microsoft Excel. In this article, we will go through the steps on how to calculate percentage in Calc, allowing you to find the proportion of a specific value within a given dataset.

Step 1: Set up your spreadsheet

Firstly, open Calc and create a new spreadsheet. In this example, we will use a simple dataset consisting of three columns: Item Name (Column A), Quantity Sold (Column B), and Total Sales (Column C).

Step 2: Calculate the total sales

The total sales for each item can be easily calculated by multiplying the quantity sold with the price per unit. For instance:

Cell C2 formula: “=B2 * [Price_Per_Unit]”. Copy this formula down for all items in the list.

Step 3: Calculate the total of all sales

In order to calculate a percentage for each item, you first need to determine the sum of all sales in Column C. To do this, create an empty cell at the bottom of Column C (for example, C11) and type in the following formula:

Cell C11 formula: “=SUM(C2:C10)”

Step 4: Determine the percentage for each item

Now that you have calculated the total sales and sum of all sales, you can determine the percentage contribution of each item to the overall sales figure. This can be done by dividing each item’s individual sale by the sum of all sales and multiplying the result by 100.

Using an empty cell in Column D (e.g., D2) enter the following formula:

Cell D2 formula: “=(C2/C$11)*100”

Copy this formula down for all items in the list.

Step 5: Format cells as percentages

Lastly, to make the results easier to read, you can format the cells as percentages. To do this, select all cells containing percentages (Column D), right-click and choose “Format Cells”. In the “Numbers” tab, choose “Percentage” and set the desired decimal places. Click “OK” to apply the formatting.

Conclusion:

Calculating percentages in Calc is a simple process that allows you to quickly determine proportions within a dataset. With these steps, you should now be able to easily calculate and display percentage values on your Calc spreadsheet for any use case you might encounter in your work.
