Percentage improvement is a helpful tool that allows you to evaluate the effectiveness of changes and modifications made within a process, project, or performance. Understanding how to calculate percentage improvement not only benefits your professional life but can also prove handy in everyday situations. In this article, we’ll guide you through the step-by-step process of calculating percentage improvement.

Steps to Calculate Percentage Improvement:

1. Identify the Initial Value:

Before calculating the percentage improvement, you should first identify the initial value or starting point. This is the benchmark against which you will compare your new value to determine if there’s been an improvement.

For example, let’s consider that you want to calculate the percentage improvement in your test scores. In this case, the initial value will be your previous test score e.g., 70 out of 100.

2. Determine the New Value:

The next step is to determine the new value, which is a result of any changes or modifications applied. This value represents the updated performance status after implementing an action.

Continuing our test score example, suppose your new test score is 85 out of 100 after attending tutoring sessions.

3. Calculate the Difference:

Once both values have been identified, subtract the initial value from the new value to find the difference between them.

Difference = New Value – Initial Value = 85 – 70 = 15

In this case, there’s a difference of 15 points in your test scores after attending tutoring sessions.

4. Divide the Difference by the Initial Value:

Now divide this difference by the initial value to determine a proportionate increase relative to the original figure.

Proportionate Increase = (Difference / Initial Value) = (15 / 70) = 0.2143

5. Multiply by 100 to Obtain Percentage Improvement

To finalize it as a percentage value for easier interpretation, multiply the proportionate increase by 100.

Percentage Improvement = Proportionate Increase × 100 = 0.2143 × 100 = 21.43%

Conclusion:

With a percentage improvement of 21.43%, you can now easily compare your new scores and observe the effectiveness of the undertaken actions, like attending tutoring sessions. Learning how to calculate percentage improvement aids in identifying areas where positive changes have been made, ensuring continued growth and development in both personal and professional scenarios.
