How to calculate percentage composition

In this article, we will discuss how to calculate the percentage composition of a compound. Percentage composition is a vital concept in chemistry, as it helps to determine the composition of a substance in terms of the relative amounts of its constituents.

Step 1: Understand the concept of percentage composition

Percentage composition represents the relative amount of each element in a compound, expressed as a percentage by dividing the mass of each element by the total mass of the compound. It is essential for determining molecular and empirical formulas, as well as understanding chemical reactions and stoichiometry.

Step 2: Obtain the chemical formula

To calculate percentage composition, you need to know the chemical formula of the compound. The chemical formula tells you how many atoms of each element are present in one molecule or formula unit of the compound.

Step 3: Determine molar mass

Next, find out the molar mass of each element present in the molecule. You can look up these values on a periodic table or in a reference book. The molar mass should be expressed in grams per mole (g/mol).

Step 4: Calculate the mass of each element

Using molecular ratios obtained from chemical formula and their respective molar masses, calculate how many grams each element contributes to one mole of the compound.

Step 5: Determine total molar mass

Now sum up all these masses (of different elements) to get total molar mass of that compound.

Step 6: Calculate percentage composition

For each element, divide its individual mass (as found in Step 4) by total molar mass of compound (from Step 5) and multiply by 100 to express it as percentage.

Example:

Let us consider water (H₂O) for which we need to find percentage composition:

1. Hydrogen (H), Molar Mass = 1 g/mol

2. Oxygen (O), Molar Mass = 16 g/mol

There are 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom in one water molecule.

Mass of Hydrogen = Molar Mass x Number of Atoms = 1 g/mol x 2 = 2 g/mol

Mass of Oxygen = Molar Mass x Number of Atoms = 16 g/mol x 1 = 16 g/mol

Total molar mass of water = Mass of Hydrogen + Mass of Oxygen = 2 g/mol + 16 g/mol = 18 g/mol

Percentage composition:

Percentage of Hydrogen (H) = (Mass of Hydrogen/Total Molar Mass) x 100% = (2/18) x 100% ≈ 11.11%

Percentage of Oxygen (O) = (Mass of Oxygen/Total Molar Mass) x 100% = (16/18) x 100% ≈ 88.89%

Thus, the percentage composition of water is approximately 11.11% hydrogen and 88.89% oxygen.

In conclusion, understanding the percentage composition is crucial for comprehending chemical reactions and stoichiometry. By following these steps, you can easily calculate the percentage composition for any given compound.
