Understanding your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is critical when it comes to determining your eligibility for certain tax benefits and whether you’ll be subject to the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). IRMAA is an additional charge added to your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums if your MAGI exceeds specific income thresholds. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of calculating your MAGI for IRMAA purposes.

Step 1: Determine Your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)

Your AGI is the starting point in calculating your MAGI. To find your AGI, refer to your most recent federal tax return. On IRS Form 1040, your AGI is listed on line 11.

Step 2: Add Back Certain Deductions

To calculate your MAGI, you’ll need to add back certain deductions that were subtracted from your income when determining your AGI. These deductions typically include:

1. Non-taxable Social Security benefits (not including Supplemental Security Income)

2. Tax-exempt interest (such as interest earned from municipal bonds)

3. Excluded foreign income (as reported on Form 2555, Foreign Earned Income)

Add the amounts of these deductions back into your AGI to arrive at your MAGI.

Step 3: Compare Your MAGI to the IRMAA Thresholds

Once you’ve calculated your MAGI, compare it to the annual IRMAA income thresholds. If you file individually or as head of household, the income limits are as follows:

– If MAGI is $88,000 or less – no IRMAA

– If MAGI is between $88,001 and $111,000 – monthly adjustment amount tier 1

– If MAGI is between $111,001 and $138,000 – monthly adjustment amount tier 2

– If MAGI is between $138,001 and $165,000 – monthly adjustment amount tier 3

– If MAGI is between $165,001 and $500,000 – monthly adjustment amount tier 4

– If MAGI is above $500,000 – monthly adjustment amount tier 5

If you’re married and filing jointly, the income limits are as follows:

– If MAGI is $176,000 or less – no IRMAA

– If MAGI is between $176,001 and $222,000 – monthly adjustment amount tier 1

– If MAGI is between $222,001 and $276,000 – monthly adjustment amount tier 2

– If MAGI is between $276,001 and $330,000 – monthly adjustment amount tier 3

– If MAGI is between $330,001 and $750,000 – monthly adjustment amount tier 4

– If MAGI is above $750,000 – monthly adjustment amount tier 5

Step 4: Calculate Your IRMAA Amount

Based on your income bracket and the corresponding IRMAA tiers mentioned above, you can now determine the additional charge that will be added to your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums. The exact amounts for each tier can be found on the official Medicare website.

Calculating your modified adjusted gross income for IRMAA purposes is straightforward with these steps. Knowing your MAGI will help you plan for potential additional Medicare expenses and ensure you can correctly estimate your overall healthcare costs in retirement.
