Introduction

Ideal Body Weight (IBW) is a method used to determine a healthy weight range for an individual depending on their age, height, and gender. Although there are various other methods to measure overall body health like body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage, IBW can still provide valuable insights. This article will walk you through the process of calculating your ideal body weight using different formulas.

1. The Devine Formula

Dr. B.J. Devine created this formula in the 1970s as an easy way to calculate IBW. The Devine formula is different for men and women:

Men:

IBW (kg) = 50 + 2.3 x (Height in inches – 60)

Women:

IBW (kg) = 45.5 + 2.3 x (Height in inches – 60)

Example of how to calculate using the Devine Formula:

A man stands at 70 inches tall:

IBW (kg) = 50 + 2.3 x (70-60) = 50 + 2.3 x 10 = 73 kg

2. The Robinson Formula

The Robinson Formula was developed in the 1980s by Dr. J.D. Robinson as an improvement over the Devine formula:

Men:

IBW (kg) = 52 + 1.9 x (Height in inches – 60)

Women:

IBW (kg) = 49 + 1.7 x (Height in inches – 60)

Example of how to calculate using the Robinson Formula

A woman stands at 66 inches tall:

IBW (kg) =49+1.7 x (66-60) =49+1.7 x6=49+10.2=59.2 kg

3. The Miller Formula

Introduced by Dr. D.C. Miller in the 1980s, the Miller Formula is another popular formula for calculating IBW:

Men:

IBW (kg) = 56.2 + 1.41 x (Height in inches – 60)

Women:

IBW (kg) = 53.1 + 1.36 x (Height in inches – 60)

Example of how to calculate using the Miller Formula

A man stands at 75 inches tall:

IBW (kg) =56.2+1.41 x (75-60) =56.2+1.41 x15=56.2+21.15=77.35 kg

Conclusion

To find your ideal body weight, you can try different formulas mentioned above and compare their results to determine which suits you best. It’s essential to remember that each person is different, and the IBW calculations should be used as a guideline rather than strict rules.
It’s also important to consider other factors like muscle mass, body composition, and overall health and fitness when determining a healthy weight range for yourself. Consulting with a healthcare professional or nutritionist can provide a more personalized assessment to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
So, go ahead and use these formulas to get an insight into your ideal body weight, but always focus on overall health and well-being rather than completely relying on numbers!
